When the homeowners of this East Side cottage started looking for venues for their wedding ceremony, they decided they would rather invest that one-time rental in something they could enjoy daily. Shademaker Studio was asked to convert their long, narrow lot into a backyard retreat that would function for the big day as well as every day.
A tall arbor covered in billowing orange cross-vine blossoms connects the two accessory structures, a cargo container and a Spartan trailer, shading the new gathering garden during the day and tying the backyard functions together. Railroad tie walls with layers of limestone infill provide a rustic texture and provide organization of the differing architectural forms.
With a focus on bird and butterfly habitat, most of the plant material is native to Texas and all of it had to be dog proof!
