- SCHOLZ BIERGARTEN
- Austin, TX // Commercial + Historic
Frank Restaurant, operators of Scholz Biergarten, chose Shademaker Studio to rejuvenate the 151-year-old historic landmark. The landscape design goal is twofold; honor the site’s history while introducing new elements that will improve and enhance the customer and worker experience.
Established in 1866, Scholz Biergarten is the oldest operating business in Texas and beloved by many. Design changes and material selection were thoroughly vetted for appropriateness. The new streetscape design is a reconfiguration of existing plant material to better the pedestrian experience and distinguish the biergarten from the sea of beige parking garages that line San Jacinto Street.
A complete redo of the patio and stage includes new trees, custom seating, new bathrooms and ADA access, all of which increase the usability of the space.
The design is subtle. Shademaker Studio demonstrated its ability to create a plan so integrated and delicate that it doesn’t intrude. Scholz Biergarten remodel is scheduled for 2019 and we will declare victory when people comment that it feels great but they can’t quite recall what changed.
