Austin, Texas

History

The landscape design for Lou’s in East Austin plays the key role of connector between history, architecture and community.

An East Austin landmark since 1975, Leal’s Tire Shop was known for its quality service and conversation-worthy murals painted by artist Tito Garcia. Preserving the cultural heritage of the site was imperative to the successful adaptation from tire shop to eatery.

Context

Drawing from its past, the new landscape uses old tires from Leal’s to frame the service area. Robust native, drought tolerant plants fill the new planters, buffering outdoor dining from street traffic. Limiting the plant palette to sage green hues, provides a calmness to the vibrant colorway of the building.
